Characteristics and uses of rubber pads made of different materials

Natural Rubber

Characteristics: Made from latex collected from rubber trees, it is a polymer of isoprene. Has good wear resistance, high elasticity, tensile strength, and elongation. It is prone to aging in the air, becomes sticky when exposed to heat, expands and dissolves easily in mineral oil or gasoline, and is resistant to alkali but not strong acid. The advantages are good elasticity, acid and alkali resistance; The disadvantage is that it is not weather resistant and not oil resistant (but can tolerate vegetable oil).

Usage: It is a raw material for making adhesive tape, rubber hose, and rubber shoes, suitable for making shock absorber parts, and products used in automotive brake oil, ethanol, and other liquids with hydroxide ions.

Styrene Butadiene Polymer

Characteristics: A copolymer of butadiene and styrene, with uniform quality and less foreign matter compared to natural rubber. It has better wear resistance and aging resistance, but weaker mechanical strength and can be mixed with natural rubber for use. The advantages are low-cost non oil resistant materials, good water resistance, good elasticity when the hardness is below 70, and poor compressibility when the hardness is high; The disadvantage is that it is not recommended to use in strong acids, ozone, oils, esters, fats, and most hydrocarbons.

Usage: Widely used in the tire industry, footwear industry, fabric industry, and conveyor belt industry.

Butyl rubber

Characteristics: It is polymerized from isobutene and a small amount of isoprene. Due to the steric hindrance of methyl groups, the movement of molecules is less than other polymers, resulting in lower gas permeability and greater resistance to heat, sunlight, and ozone. It also has good electrical insulation properties; It has a high resistance to polar solvents and is generally used within a temperature range of -54-110 ℃. The advantage is that it is impermeable to most general gases, has good resistance to sunlight and odors, and can be exposed to animal or vegetable oils or gasifying chemicals; The disadvantage is that it is not recommended to use it together with petroleum solvents, kerosene, and aromatic hydrocarbons.

Usage: Used for inner tubes, leather bags, rubber paste paper, window frame rubber, steam hoses, heat-resistant conveyor belts, etc. of automotive tires.

Hydrogenate Nitrile

Characteristics: After hydrogenation, some double chains are removed from the nitrile rubber. After hydrogenation, its temperature resistance and weather resistance are much improved compared to ordinary nitrile rubber, and its oil resistance is similar to that of ordinary nitrile rubber. The general temperature range for use is -25~150 ℃. The advantage is that it has better wear resistance than nitrile rubber, with excellent corrosion resistance, tensile resistance, tear resistance, and compression properties, and good resistance in atmospheric conditions such as ozone; The disadvantage is that it is not recommended to use it in solutions of alcohols, esters, or aromatic compounds.

Usage: Suitable as a cleaning agent for laundry or dishwashing, widely used in the air conditioning and refrigeration industry as a sealing component for environmentally friendly refrigerant R134a systems and automotive engine systems.

Ethylene propylene rubber

Characteristics: Made by copolymerization of ethylene and propylene, it has excellent heat resistance, aging resistance, ozone resistance, and stability, but cannot be sulfurized. To solve this problem, a small amount of a third component with double chains can be introduced into the EP main chain and sulfurized to form EPDM, which is generally used at a temperature of -50~150 ℃. Excellent resistance to polar solvents such as alcohols, ketones, etc. The advantages are good weather resistance and ozone resistance, excellent water resistance and chemical resistance, the ability to use alcohols and ketones, high temperature vapor resistance, and good gas impermeability; The disadvantage is that it is not recommended for food use or exposure to aromatic hydrogen.

Usage: Used for sealing components in high-temperature steam environments, bathroom equipment sealing components or parts, and rubber parts in braking systems.

Nitrile Rubber

Characteristics: Made by copolymerization of acrylonitrile and butadiene, with acrylonitrile content ranging from 18% to 50%. The higher the acrylonitrile content, the better the resistance to petrochemical hydrocarbon fuel oil, but the low-temperature performance deteriorates. The general temperature range for use is -25~100 ℃. The advantage is its excellent resistance to oil, water, solvents, and high-pressure oil; The disadvantage is that it is not suitable for use in polar solvents such as ketones, ozone, nitro hydrocarbons, MEK, and chloroform.

Purpose: Used for making fuel tanks, lubricating oil tanks, and rubber parts used in fluid media such as petroleum hydraulic oil, gasoline, water, silicone oil, and diester lubricating oil, especially sealing parts. It is currently the most widely used and cost-effective rubber seal.

Neoprene, Polychloroprene

Characteristic: It is polymerized from chloroprene monomer. The vulcanized rubber has good elasticity and wear resistance, is not afraid of direct sunlight, has particularly good weather resistance, is not afraid of intense twisting, is not afraid of refrigerants, and is resistant to dilute acids and silicone ester lubricants, but not to phosphate ester hydraulic oils. It is prone to crystallization and hardening at low temperatures, has poor storage stability, and has a large expansion in mineral oils with low aniline points. The general temperature range for use is -50~150 ℃. The advantages are good elasticity and good compression deformation. The formula does not contain sulfur, making it very easy to make. It has the characteristics of resistance to animal and vegetable oils, and will not be affected by neutral chemicals, fats, oils, various oils, and solvents, and has flame retardant properties; The disadvantage is that it is not recommended to use chemicals such as strong acids, nitro hydrocarbons, esters, chloroform, and ketones.
